APPNE ELECTED BOARD
EXECUTIVE MEMBERS
Dr Amir Khan
President
Consultant General Surgeon
FRCS Eng (Gen)
I would like to thank all members for putting their trust in me and the newly elected team. The new cabinet and Executives took office on 25th March after the oath-taking ceremony.
The Trustees and Election Commission have done a great job of conducting a smooth election with the help of Civica. APPNE’s strength lies in its membership and it was heartwarming and encouraging to see that more than 70% of APPNE members used their right to vote to elect the cabinet.
At this juncture, I would like to express a massive thanks to the outgoing cabinet for doing an outstanding and excellent job. Their hard work, relentless efforts, utmost commitment and dedication are the reason that today APPNE is standing as a towering organisation, which is duly recognised as the representative body of Pakistani physicians by regulatory bodies, professional organisations and educational institutions within the UK and abroad.
I would like to emphasise once again that this is your organisation and all of its members are valued as its stakeholders. I would like to invite all its members and physicians of Pakistani origin to come forward and play an active role to take this organisation further to a higher level.
We would like to listen to you what you as members expect from APPNE, and how best we can deliver it to you. It can not be done without your support, help, input and trust, as it takes two to tango.
We want to involve every member in the decision-making processes and the activities of APPNE. Please be active in regional chapters and energise and revitalise this concept of strong regional chapters.
We are all ambassadors of Pakistan and as its standard bearer, we have the responsibility to act professionally all the time. Together, we will serve our professional community in particular and also work for proper representation, recognition, acknowledgement and betterment of the Pakistani diaspora in general. I along with my team will do our best to serve our membership.

Joint Secretary
Being elected as Joint Secretary of APPNE for 2023-2025 is a tremendous honour. Pakistani physicians needed a robust, cohesive and affirmative voice in Europe, and there is no better platform than APPNE to do the job. A democratic, progressive, enlightened, and swiftly enlarging body of peers, APPNE has made its presence felt at the national level in no time. An epitome of the crème-de-la-crème of Pakistani physicians, APPNE has the intellect, vigour and stamina to firmly advocate the challenges of Pakistani physicians in the evolving world.
I am passionate about dedicating my dynamism to making APPNE the first choice of Pakistani physicians, being the voice of the membership, forging deep and sincere relationships with other similar organisations, and finally galvanising our energies towards attaining meaningful positive solutions to the serious challenges that confront us as doctors and Pakistanis in our area of work and life.
Innately equipped with a 'Can Do' attitude, modern technology as an ally, and astride upon the power of reason and compelling argument, I want to contribute to creating and driving an atmosphere of 'glasnost', camaraderie and hope for APPNE members and Pakistani physicians.

MESSAGE FROM EX-PRESIDENT
Dear APPNE Members
Assalam-o-alaikum
It has indeed been an extremely difficult year for most of us, with loosing so many colleagues, friends, and family members to COVID, we saw some heroic work from our colleagues and witnessed a health service under pressure.
I cannot but extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who continued to work during the pandemic bearing significant stresses at home and at work. We must salute our hard working colleagues and other health care workers and also keep in our prayers those who paid the ultimate price delivering their services. 2020 will be remembered as the most physically and mentally taxing year in our professional lives.
The successful rollout of the vaccination has indeed shown some light at the end of this dark tunnel. With a significant proportion of vulnerable population being vaccinated we can see some normality com-ing back to our way of living. There has been various challenges and vaccination of BAME communities was a big one and I must congratulate APPNE members and executives who took up this challenge in raising awareness and acceptance of vaccination in the most vulnerable population cohort. We must re-main cautious and don’t let our defences go down as we hear of the third wave, fuelled by a new variant of the virus, with increasing reports of hospitals declaring major incidents,
APPNE team must be congratulated at it remained active during this stressful period, it’s educational committee kept working at a high pace to keep colleagues updated on various relevant aspects of COVID and recent updates in its management, International Medical Doctors were facing severe hardships be-cause of COVID related travel restrictions and issues with their registrations and PLAB examinations, our IMG group did some sterling work in supporting young colleagues, liaising with British High Commission, Home Office and the GMC.
They worked tirelessly to help with boarding and lodging of these stranded doctors and mentoring them securing jobs in NHS.
I will continue to work and muster support from all IMG associations on matters of mutual interest, be it GMC matters or Adult Dependant Relative visa’s or friendly healthy sporting activities.
APPNE continues to deliver on its ethos, we published our approved constitution and held our second well contested democratic elections, and I am personally ever so thankful to all my friends and col-leagues who extended their trust in me, and I was elected to the post of President. I will do my best to work on our aims and objectives and we will expand our presence at all relevant platforms.
NHS continues to have 10,000 unfilled doctor vacancies,
with fewer hospital beds and critical care capac-ity than our European neighbours and the IMG’s are going to play ever so important role in stabilising NHS. APPNE will do its share to help in these unprecedented levels of staff shortages whether its doctors or nurses.
I indeed feel truly honoured and proud to be the president of our association and a part of such selfless dedicated colleagues.
“ I would also like to extend my sincere sympathies & condolences to the friends and families of all colleagues who gave ultimate sacrifice in line of duty.”
Best Wishes Irfan Akhtar
Consultant Surgeon
